Montblanc’s Most Controversial Accessories — What Went Wrong?

The Mahatma Gandhi Limited Edition Pen

In 2009, Montblanc released a limited edition fountain pen to honor Mahatma Gandhi, priced at approximately ₹14 lakh ($25,000). The pen featured Gandhi's image and was marketed as a tribute to his legacy.
However, the product faced backlash in India. Critics argued that associating Gandhi, known for his simplicity, with a luxury item was inappropriate. Legal challenges ensued, citing the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950, which prohibits the use of Gandhi's name and image for commercial purposes without permission. Montblanc eventually apologized and suspended sales of the pen in India.
